orton-gillingham based instruction
The Orton-Gillingham approach is a structured, evidence-based method of teaching reading that is especially effective for students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties.
Instruction is explicit, systematic, and sequential, meaning skills are taught step by step and built carefully over time. Lessons are individualized to meet each student’s needs and are designed to strengthen phonemic awareness, decoding, spelling, and reading fluency.
Orton-Gillingham instruction is multisensory, engaging students through seeing, hearing, speaking, and writing. By using multiple pathways to learning, students develop a deeper understanding of how language works and are better able to retain and apply new skills.
This approach helps students not only learn what to do when reading and spelling, but also why language works the way it does — building confidence alongside skill development.

Structured Literacy
Structured literacy is an evidence-based approach to reading instruction that is explicit, systematic, and cumulative. Skills are taught in a clear sequence, building from foundational concepts such as phonemic awareness and sound-symbol relationships to more complex reading and spelling patterns.
This approach ensures students develop a solid understanding of how language works, rather than relying on memorization or guessing strategies. Structured literacy is especially effective for students with dyslexia and reading-based learning differences.
The Science of Reading
The Science of Reading refers to a body of research from cognitive science, linguistics, and education that explains how children learn to read. This research shows that skilled reading develops through explicit instruction in foundational skills such as phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Instruction at Structured Literacy Center is grounded in this research and designed to support students who struggle with reading, including those with dyslexia.
